What is an

Ignition Interlock Device?

An ignition interlock device is a breathalyzer installed in a person’s vehicle that requires the driver to blow into a mouthpiece on the device before starting or continuing to operate the vehicle. If the breath-alcohol concentration (BrAC) detected during a particular blow is higher than certain pre-established thresholds, the device may issue either a “warning” signal or a “fail” signal. A “warning” notifies the driver and the interlock monitoring company that the driver had a detectable BrAC above the acceptable threshold, but lower than the threshold for a “fail” result. A “fail” may cause the vehicle to alert the driver by activating the vehicle’s horn repeatedly until the driver stops the vehicle and turns it off. After a fail, the vehicle may “lock out” and prevent the driver from restarting the vehicle for a certain period of time. .

INTERLOCK REQUIREMENTS

Some DUI convictions require a person to install an interlock device on his or her vehicle for a limited period of time. A first DUI conviction in a 10-year period where the driver had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.15% or more will require the driver to have an interlock device installed for six (6) months following the conviction. A second DUI conviction in a 10-year period will require the driver to have an interlock device installed for one (1) year following the conviction. A third DUI conviction in a 10-year period will require the driver to have an interlock device installed for two (2) years following the conviction. A fourth DUI conviction in a 10-year period will require the driver to have an interlock device installed for life.
